Ten slotte bood de duivel Jezus alle koninkrijken van de wereld aan in ruil voor zijn aanbidding. Jezus antwoordde: "Aanbid de Heer, uw God, en dien alleen hem!"

Dedrie verleidingenwaarvan Mattheüs optekent, geven inzicht in de problemen waar Jezus mee worstelde tijdens zijn veertig dagen in de wildernis:
- "Zeg tegen deze stenen dat ze brood moeten worden"– Het eerste dilemma waar Jezus voor stond, was hoe hij zijn wonderbaarlijke kracht moest gebruiken, of hij het nu voor zou gebruikenegoïstische redenenof teHelp anderen. Jezus ontzegde zichzelf de mogelijkheid om zijn honger te stillen, ook al had hij veertig dagen en nachten gevast. Hieruit blijkt dat het hem niet om materiële zaken gaat maar omgeestelijk voedseldoor God gegeven.
- “Gooi jezelf naar beneden”– Jezus kreeg te horen dat hij zich van het hoogste punt van de tempel moest werpen. Bij deze ene gelegenheid citeerde de Duivel zelf de Schrift. Nogmaals, de uitdaging voor Jezus was omzijn macht misbruiken. Maar het vroeg Jezus er ook ombewijzen dat hij de Messias wasen dat God echt om hem gaf. Deze vraag was een belangrijke vraag voor Jezus om mee om te gaan, omdat hij er keer op keer mee geconfronteerd zou worden als mensen zijn identiteit en autoriteit in twijfel trokken.
- "Buig neer en aanbid mij"– Deze verleiding stelde Jezus op de proeftoewijding aan Goden ook zijn verlangen naarpolitieke kracht. Jezus liet echter zien dat zijn idee van een Messias niet iemand was die politieke macht had, maar iemand die Gods koninkrijk op de eerste plaats stelde.
Jezus reageert op elke verleiding met een citaat uit deOude Testamentboek Deuteronomium. Dit laat zien dat wanneer Jezus wordt verzocht en voelt dat hij zich in een moeilijke situatie bevindt, hij naar Gods woord kijkt voor leiding.
Als gevolg van de verleidingen was Jezus sterker en beter voorbereid op zijn bediening omdat hij dat had gedaanverwierp drie valse manierenvan het uitvoeren van zijn taak:
- alleen voorzien in de materiële behoeften van mensen
- zijn kracht gebruiken om wonderbaarlijke trucs uit te voeren en populariteit te winnen
- toegeven aan het kwaad om politieke macht te verwerven
